DRASTICALLY LOWERED THE PRICE AS THIS MUST BE SOLD BY SUNDAY WHEN WE ARE MOVING
Several wood carvings & sea shell necklaces from the Marquesas Islands from 1968 when I first visited. Four guys sailed the Pacific for a year and we were the 1st boat to reach these islands in over a year other than the cargo boat that came in monthly bringing lamp oil and such in exchange for wood carvings. The Marquesans were known by the Tahitians to be very fierce and were used as warriors & to move tiki gods on Tahiti which the Tahitians feared to do. I'm sure the cargo boat also traded some illegal .22 shells, for the natives were not allowed guns by the French government. Two of the necklaces are from Rangiroa in the Tuomotu Islands which were made for me to wear upon departure and one is from a Philippine Airline flight.
The carvings which are very nicely finished hardwood are a platter depicting a fish and measuring 24? x 9?, a bowl with lid 10" diameter x 8" high, a ukelele 27", a banjo 20" long, and a heavy carved club 32" long. I have a picture of the young daughter of the family we were visiting, about 11 years of age, playing the uke with a cigarette hanging from her mouth. After all these years, the strings are gone, but can be replaced. Additionally there are multitudes of assorted small seashells, mostly as necklaces.
There is some damage
